This is an ode to the eternal artist- Frida Kahlo. I read many articles about how Frida would engage in painting only self portraits- as a distraction from pain, as a distraction from her isolation. She was injured in a car accident- with almost every bone broken in her body.. on her hospital bed, with an easel, she used to fight the pain in her leg- by painting. For a woman who used to do her own portraits, I wanted to make one FOR HER. I didn’t want a portrait of Frida to be linked to “pain” in any way- rather a remembrance of the eternal icon of challenging gender roles, a women’s right advocate- an LGBTQ icon. Her disability gave us so much to admire, to be inspired and to challenge. So this artwork, is a reminder to me, to her, to you- break free, don’t be afraid. Express- because that’s what humans do best:)
